One of those cliches that's actually true. Successful online businesses build lists of potential customers. By building lists of customers, you can market your business and opportunities directly to people, and not wait for them to return to your website. Hooking Up: The DEATH Of Feminism

I just read a review of a book about "Hooking Up." Hooking up is the term for when young girls meet young guys for sex, and sex only. There may be a relationship, there may not be. It's not dating, and it's not monogamous.
The author of the book (I'll update this entry with the name of the book and author) says that this is a false sense of empowerment to young women, that they think they have achieved some sort of independence and some sort of equality with men, but in reality they are simply handicapping themselves for future mature realtionships. This book has come under all kinds of attacks from feminists, who say that the author wants girls go back to the 1950's and that girls should be able to make these decisions on their own.
I am 44. I lived through, and saw the development of feminist ideas throught the late 60's and the 70's and 80's. I have read Nancy Friday and Erica Jong and Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem - on my own, not as part of some women's studies class. I was raised by a single (read: widowed) mother, and saw her struggles in a society that was moving from "women should stay home" to "women can sit at the boardroom table." I agree completely that women should not be treated less than men in our society.
I also recall, at a very young age - watching Phil Donohue and other talk shows with the feminist leaders, discussing the society the envisioned - that the reality was going to be that the end result of the feminist movement - if it concentrated solely on "empowering women" - would be that women were going to acquire all the bad characteristics of men, but - without likewise educating men that feminism can co-exist with traditional ideals of masculinity - men would not acquire the positive characteristics of women.
"Hooking up" proves that point. Young women, by adopting promiscuity as a lifestyle, are ignoring the risks they are exposing themselves to: AIDS, pregnancy, STDs, rape, and the dehumanization accompanying being used as an object. These young women - when they reach an age where they want mature committed relationships - will be no more equipped for commitment than the men they are "hooking up" with.
The goal of feminism was to have women achieve equality of opportunity in the workplace and the social environment. Unfortunately, it seems they have achieved the equality of the lowest common denominator.
