QUEBEC! A Joyeux Trip!

This past weekend, my company took a company retreat to Quebec, Canada. This is a semi-annual event, allowing people from different offices to get together and exchange ideas, renew friendships, and revitalize by getting out of the office and away from the day-to-day grind. I had never been to Quebec before, and - honestly - it would not have been on my top 50 places to hold this retreat, if you had asked me.

Wow, was I wrong! The people were magnificently friendly and outgoing! Almost everyone spoke English, but the predominant language is clearly French. It really is a beautiful language, especially when spoken by a beautiful young woman (and there are plenty in Quebec). The weather was cold, but no one minded it. There was a lot of snow, but the city efficiently clears it. And there was no litter - anywhere.

Next year is Quebec's 400th anniversary. I was impressed with how the city has preserved its historical buildings, its "Old City" section, and its pride in the culture. But very close by were modern art galleries and shops. Lots of Fench cafes, with a warm welcoming atmosphere. I also enjoyed the almost-Cajun-like music that played everywhere, it seemed. I am curious as to whether this is French music, or French music modified by being in North America. I don't know, but I'll check into it.

The Carnavale is a BLAST! The official drink is a mixture called a "caribou." One outside bar (all over the city are impromptu ice bars, some serving the caribou is glasses made of ice) had the list of ingredients as port wine, Triple Sec, and "alcohol" (in quotes). It can be served cold or hot - hot warms you up quicker, because I think warm alcohol is absorbed faster into the body. And they LOVE to serve you caribou!

At dinner, we had caribou - the meat. I asked the waiter if you can get this in the supermarket, and he said no, it is still a fairly exotic meat. It is very good, like a game beef. Very lean, but not as flavorful as beef. Still, very good.

I highly recommend a trip to Quebec. The Carnavale was wonderful, with rides, music, entertainment, and crowds. But I definitely got the feeling that Quebec is like this all year round. I am hoping to return there soon.
